53.5% Shiraz, 46.5% Mataro. Aged in French oak. Colour: Ruby red. Aroma: Bright red fruits, with raspberry, cherry and cranberry, hints of earthy spice and a delicate floral undertone. The wine shows bright citrus flavours with characters of lemons, limes and oranges, supported by hints of nectarines and white fleshed peaches. These interplay with impressions of passionfruit, tropical spices and Turkish musk. It expands in the mouth to become full bodied and concentrated.

Upon release it has a subtle lemon hue. The bouquet is vibrant, an intoxicating assortment of tropical and citrus. Heady aromas of passionfruit and pineapple flirt temptingly against a backdrop of grapefruit, green apple, lemon peel and a hint of gunflint. The mouthfeel is textured yet precise, with a rousing whip of acidity and simmering phenolics that give the wine increased structure and length. A complex and serious Sauvignon Blanc, displaying intense varietal character, a multi- faceted palate, and a long salivating finish.

In this traditional French blend the sauvignon blanc has given a complex range of exotic aromas and flavours suggestive of lychees, paw paw, Turkish musk and passionfruit, backed by hints of gooseberry and dried wild herbs. The Semillon has added complementary lemon and lime flavours and help fill out the midpalate providing weight and depth.

With each vintage, varietal batches are selected for Grandfather. These batches are individually aged in seasoned old oak casks before being blended together at 14 years of age. This blend is then introduced into the 'Grandfather Solera'. This Solera consists of six stages that are designed to fully integrate all components offering consistency and freshness with a final minimum average blended age of 20 years. Deep amber/mahogany in colour with green-gold tinges, this is a blend of the finest old tawnies. The palate shows classical Penfolds fruitcake, liquorice and vanillin oak flavours with a sweet full and round mid-palate, and a finish that persists on and on.
