Land that was once a high country sheep station is now a flourishing vineyard. Sheep and rabbits co-existed on the land for quite some time but the sheep couldn't keep up with the nocturnal activity of the rabbits, and in the end were driven off the land. The owner of the Rabbit Ranch - Mr McGregor, planted some vines and tried unsuccessfully to reduce the rabbit population. Rabbits now run free on the vineyard and fueled by high altitude Pinot Noir, some are reputed to be the size of ponies, but that's another story... Central Otago Pinot Noirs are becoming world famous as brilliant examples of the potential of the elusive perfumed Pinot Noir grape when grown in areas of complementary terroir. Like Burgundy - cool climate, inland sites are required, close to the 45th parallel to ensure a long slow ripening period. Pinot Noir quality is very yield sensitive and Central Otago Pinot Noirs are no exception to that rule. The Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir is made in a very soft, fruit forward, low tannin style - a wine to be savoured and supped, rather than an assault on the senses.

Rockburn's 'hands-off' approach delivers a pure expression of Central Otago to your glass; an expressive nose and deeply fruited palate displaying vibrant notes of red and black cherry, rich mocha and supple, silky tannins leading into a very long finish. Aromas are savoury with dark fruits nuances. Blueberries, figs and raspberry compote are complemented by toasted vanilla and allspice. The palate is medium-bodied with fantastic tannin structure, and the fruits are joined by dark chocolate and mocha flavours. The wine has a persistent finish of rich fruits.

Swiftsure Bannockburn Pinot Noir has a powerful aromatic; both fruitful and savoury with boysenberry, rhubarb and cherry blossom interwoven with tendrils of smoke and a faint scent of nori. The palate shows good density with a succession of berry fruit characters and a touch more of the umami feel. The tannins are wrapped in the warmth of vintage days with a vibrancy that evokes the cool jewelled Central Otago night sky.

This wine has enticing, lifted fruit aromas of red currant and cherry fruits with a touch of spice and a very subtle minty, menthol character. Medium-bodied with flavours of ripe cherry and light red berry fruits along with savoury toast and sweet spice. The palate is soft and silky. Subtle oak characters of cinnamon and cedar add to the overall complexity.
